NEW INSIGHTS Determination of Mesozoic Ocean Temperature History

چکیده
Earth’s climate has alternated between greenhouse (warm) and icehouse (cool) modes throughout the Phanerozoic (Figure 1A). At present, Earth is in the midst of an icehouse climate. Nevertheless, the rise of industrialization in the last two centuries has led to a dramatic increase in atmospheric CO 2 from the burning of fossil fuels, which, in turn, has led to signifi cant global warming (e.g., Ruddiman, 2000). Global warming could profoundly impact human life as a result of consequent global sea-level rise, more numerous and increasingly powerful B Y R E I S H I TA K A S H I M A , H I R O S H I N I S H I , B R I A N T. Structural dynamics in northern Atlas of Tunisian, Jendouba area: insights from geology and gravity data
This paper presents a new interpretation of the geometry of Triassic alignment of J. Sidi Mahdi –J. Zitoun in Medjerda Valley Plain (Northern Tunisia) based on detailed analysis of gravity and seismic reflection data. The main results of gravity analysis do not show a distinguish gravity anomaly over Triassic evaporites bodies. The positive gravity anomaly seems to be related to the entire stru...
متن کاملMesozoic paleogeography and facies distribution in the Northern Mediterranean Tethys from Western Carpathians view
West Carpathian Mesozoic paleogeographic development indicates the effect of a left lateral shift of the Alpine- Carpathian microcontinent along the European shelf since the Early Jurassic. The evolution during Late Triassic/Early Jurassic was controlled by convergence along the border of the Meliata Ocean and by contemporaneous divergence along the Middle Atlantic/Penninic rift. During Mid-Cre...

F oraminifers are single-celled, testate protists with a rich geologic record spanning at least 500 million years of Earth’s most recent history. Their abundance, diversity, and diagnostic distribution patterns make them very useful to Earth scientists for purposes of relative age determination, correlation from one locality to another, and paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Benthic foraminife...

Post-Mesozoic Rapid Increase of Seawater Mg/Ca due to Enhanced Mantle-Seawater Interaction
The seawater Mg/Ca ratio increased significantly from ~ 80 Ma to present, as suggested by studies of carbonate veins in oceanic basalts and of fluid inclusions in halite. We show here that reactions of mantle-derived peridotites with seawater along slow spreading mid-ocean ridges contributed to the post-Cretaceous Mg/Ca increase. These reactions can release to modern seawater up to 20% of the y...
